Instructor Training

Flight Instructor Training at Shobdon Airfield

With our newly acquired Approved Training Organisation status, Shobdon Airfield has added the Flight Instructor Courses (FIC) to its extensive programme of flight training. Barrie Thomas, our Head of Flight Training and fellow trainer Frank Edgar bring years of experience of running successful flight instructor courses to our new programme.

Flight instructor training is no longer restricted to holders of a commercial pilot’s licence, but you must hold an EASA PPL and you’ll be expected to undertake a pre entry skills test with one of our FIC trainers.

What’s involved?

30 hours of flight training comprising 25 hours dual instruction and 5 hours mutual flying to practise flight demonstrations. This will be carried out with another student instructor or a qualified flying instructor.

Dual instruction will take the student FI through all of the PPL exercises, so that you learn how to demonstrate and how to observe, analyse, evaluate and if necessary, correct the student’s performance. We use both the PA 28 and our Cessna 152’s for FI training, as appropriate to the exercise and type of training (dual or mutual)

Ground school, (all 125 hours of it!) will help you to plan, prepare, teach and review pre flight briefings and technical lessons, whilst refreshing your own learning and technical knowledge.

We aim to schedule our flight instructor courses so that you can buddy up with another student – working together through ground school sessions; co learning through structured self study and observing one another during flight instructor training sessions in the PA28. Co learning offers an extra dimension to the flight instructor learning process, without adding extra time and costs!

Whilst full time intensive training is our preferred learning model, we can offer part time flight instructor courses to fit in with your time (and financial!) constraints. Shobdon Airfield is an approved partner for ATPL Finance

There is the option for FIC students to live on site here at Shobdon Airfield – in one of our comfortable caravans, with on site catering available all year round – or we can provide a list of good bed and breakfast accommodation in the local area.

As a temporary member of Herefordshire Aero Club, for the duration of your flight instructor training, you’ll benefit from the friendly club atmosphere and the support of our team of flying instructors.

What will FIC cost at Shobdon Airfield?
